The history of pants
Pants have been worn by men since the 16th century. Excavations in Germany revealed a type of garment from 4th century which was meant to go around the lower body. Trousers for women did not gain popularity until early 20th century.
Early trousers for men consisted of individual hose which was secured by points or ties at the waist. By the 1930s actresses like Katherine Hepburn were seen wearing pants which made them acceptable on women. During World War II women wore their husbands clothing while they were at war as there was a rationing for clothing. In 1966 Yves Saint Laurent made the Le Smoking tuxedo suit for women which empowered them to wear clothing worn by men. The style was an androgynous, minimalist one and created a slick silhouette for women.
Pants are still a popular fashion today. There have been many variations in style from bell bottoms to skinny fir but there is no doubt about their appeal for men and women of all ages.
